Tuesday brings a throbbing headache as my mind jumps between the world with the Mark and the world others see. Last night’s surveillance outside the Winters’ house, dutifully recorded in the red notebook, felt like playing a role in someone else’s script, and I spent the remaining hours whittling under the oak until my eyelids refused to stay open and my brain quit asking questions that have no answers. A shadow passed in Mr. Garrett’s window a few times, but he didn’t bother me.

He asks this morning if everything is okay.

I say yes.

My mind keeps spinning the entire week, even as I haunt the Winters’ street for signs that never come. Each night, I pour over the scant evidence I have for Rae’s Mark, and it’s like dueling pianos in my brain as her voice counters each one.

The door to Charon’s smacked that woman who had been asking those insensitive questions. Could that have been the beginning of Rae’s change? No, that’s what happens when someone doesn’t open the door wide enough.
